Chiawa Camp has an expansive river setting within the Lower Zambezi National Park under the shade of ancient mahogany trees. Nine spacious, shaded safari tents are elevated on timber decks, overlooking the Zambezi river, each with twin beds with en suite facilities, insect screens, mosquito nets and solar-powered lighting. The superior tents at Chiawa Camp are more romantic and stylish : particularly spacious with a king sized bed, pure cotton linen, Molton Brown products, indoor and outdoor shower, double basins and ball and claw baths with glorious views. The thatched lounge & bar area, with observation deck, and dining room overlooks the river.
Activities at the owner-run Chiawa Camp include day and night drives in open 4x4 vehicles, game-viewing by pontoon boat, nature walks with professional armed rangers, fishing for tiger fish on a catch and release basis and, the highlight, canoeing to view game at close quarters, particularly elephant. Chiawa Camp also has a viewing hide, overlooking the confluence of the Zambezi & Chowe Rivers, affording excellent, peaceful viewing of birds and the large mammals as they come down to the river to drink. One of Chiawa Camp’s advantages is having enough walking guides, canoeing guides, vehicles and boats to be extremely flexible with activities.
Chiawa was voted one of 'Africa's Top 10 safari camps' by Conde Nast. Private vehicles and private fishing boats, both with private guide, are available on a per day basis. All drinks and house wine are included but premier wines are at an additional cost. The nearest airstrip is Royal Zambezi and you are transferred to the camp by road and boat (taking approx 40 minutes). |

Ginny stayed at Chiawa Camp: "Chiawa is a very pretty camp. Our visit co-incided with the arrival of a vet to assist the researcher undertaking a study of wild dogs, and the researcher, Kelly, had finally received the long-awaited delivery of five radio collars. The vet would be needed to dart the animals so that the collars could be fitted so it was hoped that this pre-scheduled task could be combined with the mercy mission to the lions. Hence our companions at dinner and breakfast were Kelly and the vet, so we had plenty of opportunity to check out the chances of our seeing wild dog in the two days we were staying. Ruefully, Kelly admitted that, having seen the pack of thirteen on most days for months, just as soon as the vet’s flight had been arranged they seemed to have disappeared from view. The next day we spent in canoeing, an activity which I enjoyed. We had to run the gauntlet of a stretch of river known as hippo city where there were so many hippo that it was impossible to know where they would slip under the water and resurface next."
