Kwandwe Game Reserve offers 22,000ha of pristine malaria-free wilderness with a magnificent, ecologically varied landscape resulting in a diverse range of game: elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo, as well as rich birdlife, including South Africa's national bird, the Blue Crane. Kwandwe offers morning, afternoon and night game drives in open 4x4s, guided river walking and canoeing, fishing, rhino tracking and fascinating historical tours. (It is an area immensely rich in history - the site of many historic Settler/Xhosa battles.) Kwandwe's night drives are renowned with aardvark and aardwolf regularly spotted. Scenic coastal flights can also be arranged.
There are four quite distinct accommodation options: Great Fish River Lodge offers 9 luxurious suites stylishly decorated in pioneering Africa style with elevated wooden decks and extremely private plunge pools and terraces overlooking the Great Fish River. Lovely glass-walled bathrooms have views down to the river aswell whereas the main lodge has massive stone-built walls and plenty of private places to read and relax.
Ecca Lodge offers six spacious suites with funky and stylish contemporary interiors. Minimalist décor, retro lighting is eclectically mixed with venerable old collectibles. Each suite has wooden panelling, extensive wooden decks and outdoor shower. A shaded lap pool is lined with teak sundecks and there’s an interpretative centre as well. This lodge welcomes children with each suite able to accommodate two children sharing with adults. A special children’s programme is operated.
The Edwardian manor, Uplands Homestead, was built in 1905 and is decorated is a completely different style with an gracious colonial ambience. The homestead is taking as a whole and has three spacious air-conditioned en suite bedrooms each with a private verandas, making it perfect for families or friends. There is a sitting room, separate dining room and a farm-style kitchen where guests are encouraged to come in and chat to the chef as she prepares your meals. Outside is an enclosed garden where you can dine under the African stars as well as a large swimming pool and gazebo. This is an exclusive experience as Uplands has its own chef and ranger so that your safari experience can be tailored to your requirements.
The new Melton Mowbray Homestead has four en suite bedrooms as well as sitting room, dining room and inter-active kitchen. With its own ranger and chef, it's a perfect private safari for families or friends (up to eight people) and has a more contemporary twist to it.
Kwandwe is 2 hours drive from Port Elizabeth (and approx 45 minutes drive on from Grahamstown). You can also choose to fly by charter plane to the lodge’s airstrip. |
