Lake Malawi
Lake Malawi is Malawi’s stellar attraction, enriching every aspect of its life. The lakeshore comprises miles of pristine sandy beaches, rocky outcrops and islands, with the call of the African fish eagle ever present. Picturesque fishing villages blend into the natural vegetation and everywhere people smile and seem delighted to see you. Over 500 species of fish occur in the lake, including the colourful endemic cichlids that are easily spotted when snorkelling. Other lakeshore activities include scuba diving, canoeing, sailing and just chilling out by the lapping waters.

Liwonde National Park
The Liwonde Park lies south of Lake Malawi, a marvellous reserve, lush and wild. Its diverse habitats – the wide and scenic Shire River, as well as riverine marsh, quiet lagoons, mopane woodland and open grassland, are home to crocodile, hippo, lion, leopard, large breeding herds of elephant, sable antelope and many other species. Birdlife is prolific and ”specials” include Pel’s Fishing Owl, Whitebacked Night Heron, Boehm’s bee-eater and Lilian’s lovebird. Game viewing is in open vehicles (day and night drives), on foot and by boat.

Nyika Plateau
The Nyika Plateau to the north soars above the Great Rift Valley, with breathtaking views of distant mountains. The beautiful rolling grassland and wooded valleys are home to eland, zebra, roan, elephant and leopard, and can be enjoyed on foot, horseback or mountain bike (see tour suggestions below). Birding “specials” include crowned cranes, the Bartailed Trogan, Denham’s bustard, Red-winged Francolin and blue swallows. However, it is perhaps the flora that provides Nyika’s greatest glory; disas, aloes, proteas and a large variety of orchids abound.

Zomba Plateau and the South
In the South, the massifs of Zomba and Mulanje rise high above the plains. The magical Zomba Plateau (1 500m), rising above the old capital of Zomba, provides spectacular vistas and is a real treat; delightful woodland walking to scenic waterfalls and dams, horse riding, mountain biking and trout fishing. Mount Mulanje, Malawi’s highest mountain at 3 000m, is surrounded by oceans of picturesque tea plantations and is a favourite with hikers and climbers. It can be comfortably visited as a day trip from Blantyre.
