The Garden Route thoroughly deserves its reputation for enchanting beauty. The Garden Route, between Mossel Bay and the Storms River, offers a spectacular coastline of dramatic headlands giving way to white sandy beaches. Behind the sand dunes lie placid lagoons and wetland lakes, with a hinterland of soaring mountains, covered by indigenous rainforest, magnificent twisting passes, waterfalls and wooded ravines. The Garden Route is perfect for those wanting to relax in beautiful surroundings and for those wishing to be more active. There are walking and hiking trails by the lakes, along the coast and in the mountains. Adrenalin-junkies are spoilt for choice with bungee jumping, bridge swinging, blackwater tubing, abseiling and cage diving amongst Great White sharks. Horse-riding, canoeing, mountain biking and excellent golfing are readily arranged.
We recommend a visit of several days during the summer and autumn months (November through to May), as there is so much to enjoy in the glorious sunshine. But in winter and spring, bear in mind that the lush vegetation of the Garden Route is explained by the higher rainfall of the region! At this time, you may wish to spend longer in the Cedarberg, KwaZulu Natal, or Mpumalanga.

The bustling town of Knysna, beside its beautiful lagoon, is known for its art galleries, woodcarvings and fresh oysters. You can enjoy a picnic on one of the many superb beaches, take a cruise to the Featherbed Nature Reserve or sail through the dramatic Knysna Heads.
Plettenberg Bay is a chic resort town with a stunning location overlooking the beautiful Walker Bay. It offers wide sandy beaches and a panoramic views of the sweeping bay backed by the Tsitsikamma Mountains. To the east of Plettenberg Bay lies the Tsitsikamma region, a dense luxuriant indigenous forest, with rugged ravines, streams and waterfalls, as well as delightful sandy coves.
The quiet village of Wilderness, with its gorgeous beach, is a nature lover's paradise known for its lakes, placid lagoon and lush indigenous forest. Enjoy a lovely peaceful walk around the lake shore on the boardwalk or stroll along the beach.
The Little Karoo is much drier country than the Garden Route and altogether different in appearance: arid, rugged mountains, country roads and lots of farming. You can sample the excellent wines of the area over lunch at a working ostrich farm or visit the Cango Caves, a labyrinthine complex of limestone caverns. The intrepid will be captivated by the wild beauty of the Swartberg Pass to Prince Albert and the mysterious hidden valley of Die Hel, whilst children will adore seeing the big cats at the Cango wildlife ranch, learning about ostriches, (even riding one), and cringing at the crocodile and snake farm.
