The Eastern Cape stretches from Cape St Francis at the end of the Garden Route to the magnificent Wild Coast. Its attractive white beaches are backed by undulating rolling pastures, bushveld and forested dunes. However, the gentle beauty of the Eastern Cape belies both the region's dramatic frontier history and the majesty of its interior; with the open vistas of the Great Karoo and the malaria-free private game reserves of Addo National Park, Shamwari, Kwandwe and Amakhala. British and Irish settlers came to the Eastern Cape in the early 19th century to try to shore up the frontier with the Xhosa people. The legacy is a fascinating cultural mix of seaside towns next to former battle sites; colonial towns next to Xhosa villages.
