Eastern Cape Home / South Africa / Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape stretches from Cape St Francis at the end of the Garden Route to the magnificent Wild Coast. Its attractive white beaches are backed by undulating rolling pastures, bushveld and forested dunes. However, the gentle beauty of the Eastern Cape belies both the region's dramatic frontier history and the majesty of its interior; with the open vistas of the Great Karoo and the malaria-free private game reserves of Addo National Park, Shamwari, Kwandwe and Amakhala. British and Irish settlers came to the Eastern Cape in the early 19th century to try to shore up the frontier with the Xhosa people. The legacy is a fascinating cultural mix of seaside towns next to former battle sites; colonial towns next to Xhosa villages.

Regions of the Eastern Cape

Port Elizabeth is the ‘gateway’ to the Eastern Cape and offers sandy beaches, fascinating cultural tours, a top class links course and many water sports.

Addo Elephant National Park lies 40 mins from Port Elizabeth, home to the densest population of elephants in Africa as well as lion, black rhino, hippo, buffalo, antelope, and even the endangered flightless dung beetle! The magnificent malaria-free private game reserves of the Eastern Cape offer superb ‘big game’ safaris. Many game lodges are orientated towards families and offer specific family safari programmes.

Graaff Reinet in the Great Karoo, appeals to those who enjoy getting off the beaten track. This fascinating old town with its superb architecture and quirky museums has been described as a living monument. Other delights are the curious, eerie sculptures of the Owl House in Nieu Bethesda and the Valley of Desolation.

Grahamstown is an attractive 1820’s Settler town, with colonial architecture and a dramatic cultural history. It is home to a thriving arts festival in July.

To the east lies the beautiful and remote Wild Coast with its Xhosa villages and magnificent coastline.
