Johannesburg, known to the locals as “E’Goli” or City of Gold, is the pulsating heart of South Africa. If your holidays require an overnight stay here, there are some truly superb hotels and fascinating tours such as visits to Soweto, the Mandela Museum, diamond mines of Cullinan or the Cradle of Mankind and the Elephant Sanctuary in the Magaliesberg. Arts and craft galleries abound and this is a very good place to buy diamonds.

| Pretoria and the Magaliesberg |
|
Pretoria, the country’s gracious capital, is famous for its flowering jacaranda trees in springtime and historical landmarks. This makes a good alternative to Johannesburg. You may like to visit President Kruger House, Church Square, the Union Buildings and the Voortrekker monument.
If you want to get out of the cities, the beautiful hills of the Magaliesberg lie only a hour’s drive away, a range of lush low hills. Visit the Elephant Sanctuary and the Cradle of Humanity World Heritage site at Sterkfontein. Perhaps take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise or simply relax at one of the superb country house hotels. You are out of the city and yet close enough to the airport to catch an early morning flight to the Kruger, Victoria Falls or Botswana.
