Camp Xakanaxa lies in one of the most beautiful parts of the Okavango Delta in the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve. A place of secret pools, tall forests, open grasslands and open lagoons. It lies on the confluence of the Khwai River and the Xakanaxa lagoon. The Moremi wildlife area is rated as one of the finest game viewing areas in Africa. Virtually every corner reveals a scene of exquisite beauty. To the north and west of the camp are the permanent lagoons and waterways of the Okavango. And to the south and east are the dry woodlands. Camp Xakanaxa, (which is pronounced Ka-Kan-Na-Ka), is highly unusual in the Moremi for offering both land and water activities all year round. Given the permanent water channels close to the lodge.
Camp Xakanaxa, with its eclectic mix of furnishings from all over Africa, oozes with charm. It has a dining room and lounge/bar area which is cantilevered over the Xakanaxa lagoon. As well as a sundeck and plunge pool all raised on wooden platforms with spectacular lagoon views. At night the camp looks stunning, lit by dozens of paraffin lamps and candles.
The camp offers 12 Meru-style luxury tents built on elevated wooden decks with en suite facilities of shower, basin and toilet. Comfort and style is offered in authentic safari style with earthy colours, wooden floors, writing desk and chairs. The tents are on the edge of the lagoon and from your private deck, with its comfortable sun loungers, you look out over the waterways of the Okavango Delta. There is generator power for recharging batteries.
The primary focus at Xakanaxa is on game drives into the Moremi Game Reserve. These drives offer excellent views of some of the Okavango specials including the red lechwe and tsessebe. Large herds of elephants are often seen in the area. And lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and hyena complete the picture. Boat trips explore the lagoon and sinuous channels of the Okavango Delta.
Make sure you bring your binoculars as birding is excellent here. Especially in the spring and summer months when the migrants are breeding. An hour's boat ride from Camp Xakanaxa are the world-famous heronries of the Godikwe and Xobega lagoons, which attract large numbers of breeding storks and herons.
Xakanaxa Camp lies within the Moremi Game Reserve, a national park, which means that night drives and bush walks are not allowed by the parks authorities. Though the quality of the game-viewing more than makes up for it, we recommend that you combine a Moremi camp with a private concession camp to get the best of all worlds.
We rate Camp Xakanaxa highly as it offers a great authentic Okavango experience with its friendly and experienced staff, charming ambience and well-appointed facilities coupled with the great game-viewing in the Moremi.
