King Lewanika is the only permanent camp in Liuwa Plain National Park, its six open-front Luxury Safari Villas are the essence of pure and simple luxury. The camp retains its safari authenticity with canvas drops, indoor and outdoor showers, decks overlooking the vast Liuwa Plain and the use of thatch and grass in the main area. All furniture was curated as a nod to old-world safari days, using leather, cotton, and canvas. The Villas offer total immersion in the vast landscape, allowing travelers to experience nature in a simple, sustainable, and meaningful way.
Experience the thrill of being immersed in true wilderness in the South Luangwa National Park, rich with leopard, lion and elephant. Be bold and ‘sleep out’ under the stars or dine al fresco under the glittering African night sky accompanied by the sound of whooping hyenas and roaring lions. Take a deep breath in as you look out over the curving horizon from the serene main lounge and warm yourself by the campfire under an endless dome of stars while listening to the legend of Lady Liuwa, matriarch of the lion pride.
The area has a long and rich history and is the homeland of the Lozi people. The traditional Monarch of the area is the Paramount Chief or King, called the Litunga, meaning 'keeper or guardian of the earth'. One of the earliest protected areas in Africa, Liuwa Plain was proclaimed a game reserve by the king in the early 1880’s; protected by the Lozi people and used as a royal hunting ground.
The destination is known as a photographer’s dream, with every season offering a different backdrop for capturing the robust wildlife. Join the experienced guides on an intimate safari excursion to admire some of Africa’s most spectacular wildlife—including a growing cheetah population—on foot, in a vehicle or by canoe.
