Birds of Eden & Monkeyland
Birds of Eden and Monkeyland are in The Crags, which lies between Plettenberg Bay & Tsitsikamma on the Garden Route. We prefer Birds of Eden to Monkeyland (as it is self-guided and you can explore at your own pace). So if time is short, we recommend visiting it first. However, they offer a combined ticket and many people love seeing the monkeys in a natural open environment.
Birds of Eden is a giant aviary set in the forest – in fact, the largest aviary in the world. The aviary incorporates the indigenous forest and waterfalls by using elevated walkways. I recommend the small bird identification book on sale at the entrance, as this increases your enjoyment ten-fold as you try to identify as many birds as possible. Allow at least one hour and preferably more. There’s a restaurant at the end of the aviary and a shop.
Next door is Monkeyland which younger children may enjoy. They offer an hour long tour every 30 minutes or so. You can also purchase combination tickets which cover both options. However, personally we find it a little too contrived and touristy. But you do see a lot of different species of monkeys and the suspension bridge is fun for kids.
Other options in The Crags
There are plenty of other activities on offer in this area. We recommend heading to Bramon Wine Estate for lunch and a spot of wine-tasting. Nearby is the Elephant Sanctuary and also Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre.
Please note that we don’t book these tours on a standalone basis. But you can book it online on the supplier’s website if you follow the links given above.
The price above is for either Monkeyland or Birds of Eden. However, you can buy a combination ticket which is less than two separate tickets.
