The 4 hour Soweto bicycle tour allows you to experience the exciting and eco-friendly streets of Soweto, South Africa’s largest black residential area. Spend half a day soaking up the history, culture and many different faces of Soweto. From the Soweto uprising and the resistance against Apartheid, to the developing communities and what they look like today. 

Itinerary at a glance:

• Start at Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers and get to the first stop – a lookout point of Orlando West and East.
• Next stop is the Mzhimhlope Men’s hostel (a former migrant workers hostel).
• Continue through the vibrant community of Meadowlands.
• See one of Soweto’s few “mansions”, owned by jazz musician Abigail Khubeka, who used to perform with “Mama Africa”, Miriam Makeba.
• Visit the Hector Pieterson Memorial commemorating the student’s uprisings on 16 June 1976.
• Proceed to the only street in the world which has been home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners – Nelson Mandela and Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu.
• Cycle into the little suburb called “Beverly Hills of Soweto”.

Bicycles, helmets, snacks and traditional beer are included in this tour, as well as a traditional lunch at a local restaurant. The meal is a delicious African stew cooked the traditional way – over the fire. The stew is served in a fresh piece of bread, called a “bunny chow”.
