Leroo La Tau lodge is built on the cliffs 15 metres above the Boteti riverbed. The Boteti River is the natural western boundary of the Makgadikgadi National Park. And has been dry for years, except for deep permanent waterholes. However in 2009 after very strong summer rains, the Boteti River started flowing 17 years after it last flowed in 1992 - a miraculous lifeblood for the wildlife in the area.
Leroo La Tau offers a bird’s eye view of the river below, and in the dry season (July to October) wildlife concentrates around the water hole in front of the lodge, especially large herds of zebra and wildebeest. The raised vantage point ensures unsurpassed views of these animals as they quench their terrible thirst. However, Leroo La Tau is not only about lion, zebra and wildebeest. The camp also boasts sightings of Chobe bushbuck, leopard, brown and spotted hyena, impala, kudu, jackal, porcupine, genet and caracal. Most unique however, are the crocodiles and an amazing pod of hippo which have survived in extremely adverse conditions for over 12 years. The hugely contrasting seasons and terrain of the Makgadikgadi National Park makes it a unique haven for large herds and predators alike.
Leroo La Tau accommodates 24 guests in luxurious ensuite chalets, on raised wooden decks. These are spread out along the river banks to enjoy the views. The main lounge and dining room offers you the opportunity to sit back and relax at the bar while listening to the wide variety of night sounds characteristic of the African bush. Alternatively you can relax around the pool during the warm desert days. Evenings can be spent at the campfire which also overlooks the waterhole. The lodge has an east-facing direction so that you can watch the sun rise over the Makgadikgadi.
The lodge offers both day and night drives. Morning game drives are in the park with guests being transferred across the river to waiting game vehicles. Evening game drives take place in their private concession. There’s also a hide set closer to the river level. This is a rewarding place to hang out at the end of the dry season when game concentrations are at their peak.
Note: We recommend a three night stay at Leroo La Tau if possible as then your second full day will take the form of a day long safari excursion to nearby Nxai pans and the beautiful Baines Baobabs which is also part of the Makgadikgadi National Park.
The rooms at Leroo La Tau are extremely big, luxurious and very inviting. You can relax on your deck and view large numbers of wildebeest coming down to the river to drink. The fact that the river is flowing has just added so much more to that setting of being high up on the cliffs. The rooms and bedrooms have large ceiling to floor glass windows, taking full advantage of that stunning view. The lodge faces east, awakening to dawn breaking, is just simply amazing! Again, a high level of service and great food. I recommend this lodge if you have the time, especially because it is in a desert environment.
They can now also offer motorboat trips on the newly flowing Boteti River. That was our chosen afternoon activity instead of a game drive. We saw a lot of birdlife, hippos and also wildebeest and zebra on the banks of the river. Game vehicles are left on the other side of the river for their game drives in the park. We drove along the banks of the river to a nice sundowner spot and on our way back saw elephants and a giraffe coming down to drink at the river and well as two jackal.
If clients would like to visit the Makgadigadi Pans, a 3 night stay is preferable, because it is a full day trip to the salt pans which is what many people want to see.
The following morning started with breakfast, a boat cruise across the river to where the safari vehicles were, for a game drive to have a look at where the 'Rhino-Boma' is. This was built and funded by Desert & Delta Safaris to accommodate a rhino bull after two female rhinos were released in the area. He has joined the female rhinos and at present there are also two young calves. Desert & Delta’s Rhino Safari is also in support of the rhinos in Botswana and hopefully in future the numbers will increase in the area.
