Kwando Tau Pan Camp is situated inside the world famous Central Kalahari Game Reserve right on the edge of the beautiful Tau Pan. (Only two camps are actually in the reserve).

‘Kalahari’ is derived from the Tswana word meaning ‘great thirst’ – and it has vast areas covered by red sand without any permanent water. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve was closed to the public for many years that is why it is justifiably called one of Africa’s last true wilderness areas.

After the summer rains the Central Kalahari completely transforms as the plains and pans burst with sweet grasses. This is one of the best game viewing areas in Botswana at this time of year and not many seem to be aware of this – so visitors are few. Springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest converge in their thousands, predators abound with plentiful lions – including the famous black-maned lions of the Kalahari – as well as cheetah, leopard and jackals. Brown hyenas and wild dogs are also found in the area.

Accommodation

Situated on an established sand ridge overlooking Tau Pan the camp commands stunning views of the endless Kalahari horizon. Kwando Tau Pan camp consists of 9 custom-built desert rooms under thatch and a central lodge area with dining room, lounge area, interpretation centre/library and curio shop. Outside there’s a game viewing deck and swimming pool. Star-gazing is also especially beautiful here due to the remote location of the camp, and a telescope is provided for guests’ use. Each room at Tau Pan camp is en suite with an additional alfresco shower and a private viewing deck. One room is a family room sleeping 4 people. Families with children under 12 years are welcome but need to take a private safari vehicle.  A sleep-out deck is available, for guests staying three nights or more, who wish to spend an amazing night sleeping under the open Kalahari night sky.

Activities

Activities include game drives in open 4 x 4 vehicles and guided walks with a San guide who will explain and entertain you by answering all your questions from birth to marriage to bush survival. During the rainy season, when the game-viewing is at its best, the focus is more on the game drives. During the dry season, the focus is more on the interaction with the San people.

Note: Kwando Tau Pan is in the Central Kahari Game Reserve which is a National Park and an ecological sensitive area so no off-road driving or night drives are permitted.
