African Safari in December – suggested destinations
This is the peak holiday season in the Cape, with the sunniest weather and events to celebrate the outdoor lifestyle – plus the heady Southern Hemisphere treat of Christmas on the beach! The whole region is sunny and hot throughout the northern hemisphere winter.
But book early as South Africa gets virtually booked out months ahead. You may want to avoid the peak areas of Cape Town and the Garden Route just after Christmas as all the restaurants and activities get booked up.
Namibia, Kariba and the Northern Cape are very hot – up to 40°C (104°F) in the shade. The Cape is dry but the Indian Ocean coast and islands have rainfall and short thunderstorms.
The Christmas period brings peak pricing to many lodges and hotels throughout southern and eastern Africa; early planning is especially important if planning a visit at this time.
Note that it’s probably a month or so too late to go whale watching at False and Walker Bays.
