Xigera Camp, (pronounced kee-je-ra), lies in one of the most beautiful parts of the Okavango Delta on Paradise Island, a private concession close to the Moremi Game Reserve. It has permanent water year-round, yet there are lots of large islands in the area that hold good concentrations of animals, including a high density of the rare sitatunga antelope. red lechwe, spotted-necked otter, elephant, buffalo, reedbuck and tsessebe. Predators include lion, spotted hyaena and leopard. This means that Xigera is the perfect land and water activity camp, with game drives, walking safaris, mokoro and boating trips for game-viewing on offer throughout the year.
This concession lies in an International Birding Area (IBA) with many ‘Okavango specials’ being present, including Pel’s Fishing-Owl, African Skimmer, Brown Firefinch, Greater Swamp Warbler, Wattled Crane, African Pygmy Goose and Lesser Jacana. Alongside plenty of kingfishers and eagle species.
Please note that the game drives are very limited at the peak flood time as it the camp is completely surrounded by water at that point.
Nestled in a magnificent riverine forest, Xigera Camp offers twelve exquisitely-furnished tented rooms in wood and canvas. They are elevated on wooden decks offering views of a seasonal floodplain and small lagoon. All offer a superb view of the seasonal floodplain and are linked by walkways to the main public areas.
The thatched lodge has a lounge, dining area, bar, viewing deck and plunge pool. Dinner can also be taken under the stars in a traditional African boma. Guests are sometimes treated to close-up views of lion or leopard using the footbridge connecting Xigera to the next island! Whilst the sandpit records the tracks of nightly camp visitors, which often include leopard, lion and hyena.
