Kate’s review of Magashi Camp

Magashi Camp has a stunning setting. It is right on the edge of the lake with serene and tranquil views. Your sleep was accompanying by the snorting of hippos, including the louder bellowing of a hippo who was giving birth right outside our tent.

The camp has a wonderful tranquil ambience with an open sided mess tent for dining and lounging. You can choose to dine under the tented roof or alfresco.

From the main tent, timber walkways take you down to the camp firepit close to the lake’s edge and to their lovely refreshing swimming pool, which was deep and thus probably remains cool even in hotter months.

The tents were charming – spacious with a contemporary, yet slightly funky, décor. Eg splashes of pink to offset the khaki and beige, even in the mosquito net. I loved sitting out on the deck looking at the hippos in the lake. I also loved the cappuccinos delivered to our door. Behind the bedroom area there’s a dressing area and a walk in bathroom with enclosed loo and a large shower. Not crazy about the grey tiles (but that’s about my only complaint! )

The camp is new and so the serving staff were still a little uncertain at times. But they were very friendly and I feel sure that all ‘edges’ will be rounded within a year or so.

Tip about Tsetse Flies – Tsetse flies are not an issue at the camp too much (due to the cooling lake breezes) but we did encounter them en route into the camp when we went through a forested area. Make sure that you are well-covered around the ankle area. And try not to wear black or blue as the Tsetse fly loves these colours.
