Chisa Busanga Camp

CEDARBERG RATING

Luxury

Overview

When Green Safaris's founder, Vincent and his close friend Bert Meerstadt, an architect from the Netherlands, were wandering together around the island where the camp would be situated, they both looked up and stared at a beautiful bird’s nest. In a split second and without words, they both realised what the design of this new camp would be – nests!

Chisa Busanga Camp lies in the middle of the Busanga Plains. A most innovative design to complement the majesty of the surrounding terrain.

Weavers' nests make ingenious homes and they wanted to replicate this in some way. The goal was to offer unique and fascinating accommodation as well as create beautiful spaces where guests could reflect on nature’s wonder and ingenuity. What we were soon to be reminded, however, is that nature has had millions of years to perfect her designs.

The Nests have become part of the magic that is woven into the Busanga Plains. It’s hard not to be captivated by this fairy-tale! Each room has its own private deck, you can opt to dine privately overlooking to vast plains from your nest, and enjoy our complimentary laundry service. One of our rooms is equipped with an electric lift to ensure it is accessible for anyone visiting our mini paradise.

Chisa Busanga Camp – Kate’s review

What an amazing place, both the Busanga Plains, but also the innovative architectural Chisa Camp.
The Busanga Plains delivers both in sheer quantity and diversity of predator sightings with cheetah, leopard and lion seen all on one game drive. Plus Busanga has only 15,000 visitors versus 1.5million visitors to the Kruger National Park. But it is larger than the Kruger at 22,000sq km versus Kruger’s 19,000 sq km. So that means that you have some incredible predator sightings, practically all to yourself.

Accommodation

Chisa is known for its amazing bird’s nest rooms accessed via a staircase, though one of them has a lift for people who cannot manage stairs. These are cosy and comfortable with amazing morning views. Make sure you allow enough time to enjoy coffee there in the early morning before your drive. They have an enclosed toilet, shower, basin and the eco-friendly “Air-Breeze” cooling system.

If you only have 2-3 nights for Kafue, then spend them all at Chisa. If you have 4+ nights, we recommend 1-2 nights at its sister lodge Ila Safari Lodge and 3 nights in the Busanga Plains at Chisa.

The plains have a very short season as it is very water-logged until June and then most camps close at the end of October, but Chisa stays open until the first rains. Can be very cold at night in June-July. But then have the mist in the early mornings so very dramatic photographic opportunities.

There are only five camps in the Busanga plains, so the plains are never crowded.

As it is run by Green safaris, they operate electric land-cruisers which make for an amazing quiet game drive where you can listen to the sounds of the bush more easily.

Practical Comments

•Sheer quantity and diversity of predator sightings
•4 treetop suites, accessed by stairs, however one has a lift for frailer clients
•Lovely open-sided main lodge area
•Campfire and Swimming pool
•Accessed by air from either Livingstone (1.5 hours), Lusaka (1+ hours) or central Kafue (short flight hop)
• Note - It is at 1500m altitude so cold winters ! Nights can get down to 4-5c between June to mid Aug, so morning game drives can be cold - hats, scarves, jackets needed
