Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp lies in a private Okavango Delta concession (NG27A) on the western border of Chief’s Island and the Moremi Game Reserve. The camp has been beautifully hand crafted and designed so that its open-plan dining room, lounge, wildlife library, and expansive sundecks all offer unobstructed views over the beautiful and seemingly endless floodplains of the Okavango Delta.
Situated under dense stands of African ebony and strangler fig trees, Nxabega Tented Camp accommodates 18 guests in the classically elegant safari tents on elevated wooden platforms with private game-viewing decks. Beautiful details such as burnished teak floors, huge wooden bowls full of chillies and a solitaire game made from local vegetable ivory pods add a signature style to Nxabega.
There's an attractive swimming pool for cooling off during the warm Botswana days with sun loungers and drinks at the ready as well as expansive decks on two sides and plenty of comfortable places to sit inside and out.
You have a choice of daily game activities in Nxabega’s 7,000ha private concession including meandering along the river channels by mokoro (usually in season) or tracking big game on foot or by open 4x4-safari vehicle. Nxabega means ‘place of the giraffe’ and these are just one of the many species found here as well as elephant, lion, leopard, zebra, semi-aquatic lechwe, sitatunga and hippos. The concession has a variety of habitats including a large wetlands area. 343 bird species have been recorded at Nxabega with wetland species such as the African Jacana, open billed stork and malachite kingfisher. You may even be able to spot the rare Pel’s fishing owl whilst on a mokoro or boat cruise.
We’ve informally classified Nxabega as a multi-activity camp as you will be able to enjoy water activities for most of the year, however activities will be more orientated towards game drives and bush walks during the dry season. The standard of guiding is very good with a guide and a tracker on hand to impart their extensive knowledge. Nxabega also aims to make their safari experience more unique with bush picnics in stunning settings, breakfast in bed, cocktails on an Okavango Delta island or alfresco dinners under lanterns.
Sister camps to Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp include Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge, Xaranna Delta Camp in the southern Okavango Delta, as well as its semi-mobile camps such as Chobe under Canvas and Savute under Canvas.
Children are welcome, and one child maximum may share with 2 adults with a maximum of one triple in the camp at any one time. Nxabega also has a spacious family tent with an enclosed inter-leading walkway. Children over the age of 6 years are allowed on regular game drives at the discretion of the camp manager, but cannot go on game walks. Canoes and mokoros are available to adults only, (including children of 16 years and older). Early dinners are always available and recommended for under 6's.
They call Nxabega “the Gentlemen”. Lighter woods are now used but there’s still quite a manly feel to the lodge. All in all, it runs very well and I would recommend it. The main areas were looking very outdated but a refurbishment is about to start to bring the lodges area up to the same standard/décor look & feel as the new tents. The tented rooms are looking very good with a great combination of fresh, light woods with a traditional safari feel and colours. Spacing is the only real issue as the bedroom area seems a little tight. The little foyer is not really needed and this could be converted to the luggage area. The bathroom is very spacious (and they could have incorporated the luggage /dressing area in here as well rather than behind the bed, but anyway….). We had good game viewing with water activities available on the permanent channels. The Staff are well established, experienced and very knowledgeable.
There was no air conditioning, only a standing fan in the room. The camp runs on generator power so all gets switched off 1 hour after last guest goes to bed then back on 1 hour prior to wake up (around 4/5am) depending on season.
Note: Nxabega had a rooms refurbishment earlier in the year but the main lodge area is being refurbished now (Jan-Feb 2017).
