The Boraha Village Hotel is a small and friendly beach lodge, one of only a small number of hotels on the east coast of Ile Sainte Marie. The 15 bungalows at Boraha Village Hotel are set on a hillside and each has private terrace overlooking the gardens and the sea. Built with simple rosewood furniture and traditional materials, they fit perfectly into their relaxed beach environment with en suite bathrooms and a good-sized deck with chairs and a hammock. Two of these are family chalets with two bedrooms sharing one bathroom, one for 4 people and one for 5 people. There is no air-conditioning but the hillside location ensures good sea breezes which assist with both the heat and mosquitos.
The restaurant at Boraha Village Hotel focuses not unsurprisingly on fresh seafood fish with lobsters and shellfish caught on the day and grilled, duck with vanilla, coconut chicken and of course their famous ‘crab in the funnel’. The restaurant leads out onto a really gorgeous jetty stretching out into the lagoon.
The beach here is very tidal so you can access the water by sauntering down the jetty and then slipping into the clear waters. Diving and snorkelling on the reef are a short boat ride away or you can take a longer boat cruise to the small islands.
The hotel has a small massage room with a variety of treatments on offer. If you want to be more active, you can hire out bicycles or take a walking trail to discover the island under your own steam. Another option is a kayaking trip to visit the pirates’ cemetery. Alternatively the hotel can arrange a number of guided tours by quad or by motorbike all over the island. You can even see humpback whales on their annual migration between June and September
