Little Vumbura

Overview

  • One of the smarter of Wilderness Safaris classic camps
  • Offers land and water game-viewing experiences
  • Intimate and friendly little camp
  • Sustainable tourism practices

Little Vumbura is one of the smaller of the Okavango Delta camps, accommodating just twelve guests on a tree-shaded island in the same concession (NG22) as its sister camp, Vumbura Plains. The focus at Little Vumbura is slightly more on the water activities as the camp is surrounded by water and it’s also closer to the permanent waters of the big, fast flowing rivers. Enjoy mokoro trips in the shallow floodplain waters and boating in the deeper channels. However, game viewing by vehicle is very much one of the highlights so this is the perfect ‘multi-activity camp’ for nearly all of the year. Wildlife viewing and birding is consistently good all year round, and bush walks (on request) around the islands are an opportunity to enjoy Africa from a different perspective.

Attractive palms give the camp a wonderful tropical feel and bring the elephants onto the island, especially towards the end of the dry winter. Little Vumbura has six tents under an enormous canopy of ancient forest. Each tent is large and roomy with an en suite bathroom, as well as an outside shower if you want to be even closer to nature.

Designed to blend in with its surroundings, Little Vumbura is shaded by the canopy of an ancient Okavango forest. The dining room and bar are under thatch and are built in and around the existing trees. There is a small swimming pool for relaxing during the quiet of the day and plenty of comfortable indigo blue armchairs and sofas in the lounge area. There’s also a small library which enjoys excellent views over the waters. One of the camp's attractions is the outdoor dining area and star deck built out over the floodplains so that you can enjoy dining under the stars.

Game activities at Little Vumbura

Little Vumbura has both the wetland species - red lechwe, waterbuck, hippo, crocodile - as well as the savanna wildlife species - sable, kudu, wildebeest and tsessebe. Herds of buffalo and elephant occur here, along with the predators, lion, leopard, wild dog and cheetah. Guests who enjoy their birding will love the combination of all the Okavango water "specials" with acacia and dry woodland species.

Little Vumbura offers the full range of activities - in boats, mekoro, walks, drives and fishing. Game drives are conducted in open 4x4 Land Rovers with experienced guides. Night drives are possible nearly all year, but may be restricted at peak flood times if there are extremely high water levels. The variety of wildlife is stunning. Guests can go out by boat in the morning and see hippos, crocodiles, red lechwe and all the aquatic wildlife and then travel out by landrover in the afternoon to see elephant, sable and all the dry savanna game.

Vumbura and Little Vumbura are part of a community participation plan with the aim of bringing the communities who live around the Okavango Delta into the tourism mainstream. The villagers who live to the north of the Okavango have been granted the rights to this area, which allow them to derive direct benefits from the wildlife through significant concession fees, employment opportunities and training.
