Londolozi Varty Camp oozes with history and charm, one of the first private safari lodges in the Sabi Sand game reserve which lies within the greater Kruger Park. The campfire has burnt here for over 86 years making Varty Camp the heart and soul of Londolozi. It has a pleasant down-to-earth quality. Eight chalets and two superior chalets all enjoy expansive river views over the boulders of the Sand river in the well-known Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Each has a private plunge pool on the wooden viewing decks.
The public area is raised off the ground and the soaring thatched roof echoes the cathedral of trees above with an expansive deck, alfresco dining area and a sitting area with roaring fires for the winter evenings. Londolozi's interesting history is on display with photographs of the early bush camp. Dinner is served in their lantern-lit boma or perhaps on the dining deck, illuminated by lanterns, candles, bowls of dire and of course, a starlit sky.
Londolozi Varty Camp is also home to the original Sparta Hunting Camp which has been turned into the John Varty Cinematography Centre with conservation films available as well as the Lifestyle Centre with its cardio room, massage room and wine cellar.
The camp has a pleasingly down-to-earth quality and the emphasis on family heritage means that children always have a place at Varty Camp. The camp offers an innovative family safari programme which doesn't just aim to keep children amused, but focuses on learning about Africa's wilderness areas. Children from 6 years up to teenagers join their Cubs programme. This includes mammal behaviour, bird identification, bug catching, plants and their medicinal uses, know your Land Rover, understand your weapon, shooting practise, conservation and fishing on special game drives and walks. They also know that some kids love getting dirty and loud so African dance, singing and drumming, gumboot dancing, mud playing and dung splitting is also on the menu! For those more creative children, indoor activities include paper mache, candle making, baking and bead making to get those imaginative juices flowing.
Note: As each chalet has its own private pool, we would not advise Londolozi Varty Camp for very young children if the parents are aiming to relax!
