Machangulo Beach Lodge

Machangulo Beach Lodge has an enchanting location at the convergence of the Indian Ocean and the estuary leading to Maputo Bay. It lies only a 45 minute boat journey away from the Maputo marina. This means that despite its tranquil unspoilt setting, it is actually one of the more accessible of the southern Mozambique beach lodges. This is an ideal setting for a family breakaway, honeymoon, fishing trip or diving adventure.

The lodge overlooks endless white beaches with chalets nestled in pristine and untouched dune forests. Behind the lodge lies the estuary bursting with fish life and in front, the Indian Ocean – all in an energetic harmony. Hidden away amid the dunes and forests, Machangulo Beach Lodge has a warm and inviting atmosphere, keeping its guests calmly protected from the epic nature outside.

Accommodation

The lodge has 5 private luxury chalets. Each chalet has an en suite bathroom, air-conditioning, mosquito nets and private deck. They all have a breathtaking view of the ocean and Inhaca Island. Other rooms are grouped into Villas. All are connected by walkways which meander through the cool forest to the main building and beach.

The two Beach Villas, each with four detached rooms, are right on the beach. Each room is en suite with a private deck and partial sea views so that they can be sold individually or as an exclusive use villa. Each Beach Villa has its own private swimming pool, deck and boma style campfire area. They can accommodate up to eight adults and six children if taken as a villa. There are also two Family Villas with two en suite rooms which are a little further away from the beach.

Machangulo Beach Lodge has a large inviting lounge with bar and dining area. Hidden behind is the Boma (dining area) where evenings are spent beside the fire while enjoying the tranquil Mozambican nights. Down by the beach is the Beach Bar where the vibrant atmosphere is kept alive from dawn to way past dusk! There’s a swimming pool and deck by the Beach Bar for you to cool down before an afternoon siesta.

Activities on offer

There is a range of activities on offer. Snorkeling in the nearby Inhaca Marine Reserve as well as from a ledge in front of the lodge. Scuba diving including wreck snorkelling is also very popular, as well as a variety of fishing options (deep sea fishing, surf fishing and fly fishing). Other activities include guided tours of Inhaca island, a cultural tour of Santa Maria with lunch and drinks at the famous Teka teka bar. In season you can enjoy whale watching excursions from June/July to November, turtle nesting walks in November-December time as well as beach and dune forest walks. Machangulo Beach Lodge is a birder’s paradise for both forest birds and sea birds in the estuary. Birding excursions by boat are also a possibility.

Families at Machangulo Beach Lodge

Machangulo is a wonderful environment for families with rock pools for exploration, snorkelling, endless sandy beaches and the villas offering the perfect family accommodation. A nanny service and supervised children’s activities are also available (at an extra cost).
