Overview

Sabi Sabi Selati Camp, furnished with turn-of-the-century charm, meticulously created as an authentic home in the bush, is the most unforgettable of all African experiences. On the banks of the Msuthlu riverbed, Selati Camp is strategically situated between the Sabie and Sand Rivers on the traditional game migration path from the Kruger.

Originally created without electricity to preserve the ambience, Selati Camp has now installed overhead fans, air-conditioning and all the trimmings expected from a luxury safari lodge. Nights here are quiet, intimate and possessed of a rare magic as it  is lit at night by the flicker of oil lamps, the warm glow of fires and the spectacular canopy of the Southern night sky.

Home cooked cuisine is served on decks built over the riverbed; dinner is in the open air 'boma' or in the 'farmhouse kitchen'.

Accommodation

Fashioned in a colonial "Out of Africa" style, the camp comprises eight thatched suites, each with full bathroom en-suite and private alfresco shower nestled under majestic indigenous trees, blending perfectly into the surrounding bush.

The premier accommodation is the sumptuous and spacious Ivory Presidential Suite. It offers colonial grandeur in the form of original antiques, a draped four-poster bed, private terrace, and fireplace. The magnificent en-suite bathroom, complete with Persian carpet and antique chaise-lounge, also features a very private plunge pool. The separate dressing room features an antique wardrobe and matching dressing table.

The Lourenco Marques Suite is a must for honeymooners or the romantic at heart. Whether it is the fragrant flower petals strewn on the bedlinen, or the candles illuminating the bathroom on return from the evening safari, a stay in this romantic suite will always be remembered.

Sabi Sabi's Selati Camp combines turn of the century elegance with personalised safari luxury - a rare experience.

Sabi Sabi Selati Camp – review by Kate

Excellent little camp, This is “yesterday” in Sabi Sabi's theme of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow). It is styled to look like an Explorers Camp of the 1920's or 30s. I have to confess that I didnt like it when I last visited, however I liked it much more this time around. I think because they have brought it more up to date, whilst staying with the theme.

It’s a small and exclusive camp with 6 rooms (incl a Presidential and Honeymoon suite.) The main public areas are generally semi-outside, open to sides but under cover, and are lined up along a dry river bed with a very attractive expanse of savanna plain on the opposite bank.

Before the colonial-styled bedrooms were all very frilly curtains and chintz sofas a la the 1920’s. However they have toned this down and so the rooms look good. Still 1920’s in style but the bathrooms are not old-fashioned. Naturally however you need to like this concept. If you are into modern interiors then Selati aint for you!

There’s an open plan bathroom (with enclosed loo) with a curtain to close it off from the bedroom. However they also had a curtain which enclosed the bath as well (which wasn’t really needed in my opinion). Outside each room has a small private enclosed garden area with outside bath which was a nice touch. The Presidential Suite was more as I had remembered with lots of chintz, memorablia and fussy curtains. So it wasnt for me, but its a matter of personal taste. But it was huge and came with its own plunge pool)

If you want to use the spa, you are taken to Sabi Bush Lodge spa which is 20-25 mins drive away.
