The superb beach at Belle Mare and the lovely Ile aux Cerfs off the coast near Le Touessrok are the drawcards for the east coast of Mauritius. The East Coast is more exclusive than the West Coast and has some of the island’s most luxurious hotels.
Long lagoons are mostly shallow with deep canals so that the sparkling waters swirl from blues to greens. It’s a good region for the kite-surfing craze and is the most appealing region for golfers as there are two golf courses at Belle Mare and the championship course on Ile aux Cerfs.
Prevailing winds make the east coast notably cooler and drier in summer which can be a counterpoint to the hot sun. However these same trade winds can feel a bit too fresh for sunbathing in the winter months (when we recommend the western side of the island).
