Overview

Germanic buildings in Windhoek, Namibia, Windhoek hotels

Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, is one of Africa’s most approachable and appealing cities. Set among rolling hills and highland ridges dotted with acacia trees, it is compact, clean and well organised. So it’s a comfortable introduction to the country for first-time visitors.

Its history is visible everywhere. German colonial influences remain strong, from Germanic buildings and delicious bakeries, to beer gardens and pavement cafés. At the same time, Windhoek is unmistakably African, with informal street markets, local crafts and a mix of cultures that reflect Namibia’s fascinating diversity.

Exploring Windhoek

Windhoek - Herrero lady selling craftsWindhoek is small enough to explore on foot. A stroll through the city reveals its distinctive quirky High German architecture, including the hilltop Christuskirche, the Tintenpalast (seat of parliament) and the trio of historic castles:  Schwerinsburg, Sanderburg and Heinitzburg - the latter now a characterful five-star hotel.

Browsing local markets and shops offers insight into Namibia’s cultures, while pavement cafés and restaurants make it easy to settle in and watch the city go by. Dining out is a meat-lovers’heaven, with everything from traditional game dishes to classic German fare.

Where to Stay in Windhoek

There’s a wide choice of Windhoek hotels and guesthouses, as well as several excellent lodges just outside the city that offer space, views and a softer transition into the country’s wide-open landscapes.

We particularly like the lodges just outside the city. Habitas Namibia, Omanda and Okapuka Country Lodge allow you to relax in natural surroundings while remaining within easy reach of Windhoek. These all allow you relax at the end (or start of your Namibian holiday) in style.
