A spectacular coastline of dramatic headlands, indigenous forest and white sandy beaches backed by verdant mountains. The Garden Route is one of South Africaβs most rewarding and relaxed regions to explore: a natural paradise for families, honeymooners and couples alike.
The Garden Route thoroughly deserves its reputation for enchanting beauty. Stretching along the southern coast between Mossel Bay and the Tsitsikamma Storms River, it is a region of constant contrast. A spectacular coastline of dramatic headlands overlooking white sandy beaches. Behind are soaring mountains covered by indigenous rainforest, magnificent twisting passes, waterfalls and wooded ravines.
In other areas, the bird-filled lagoons and wetland lie behind the fynbos-covered sand dunes.
This is a place where days unfold easily. Scenic drives link a string of characterful towns, while walking trails lead through forests, along cliffs and beside wetlands alive with birdlife. The pace is relaxed, the lunches are long and the landscape varied.
Garden Route holidays suit couples, families and honeymooners alike: Β whether youβre looking to unwind in nature, stay active outdoors, or simply enjoy one of South Africaβs most rewarding self-drive routes.
Adventure & Activities
The Garden Route offers plenty to do, but never demands it. You might spend one day hiking through forest or along a coastal trail, and the next cruising by boat on a lagoon or enjoying a long lunch overlooking the ocean.
For those seeking more excitement, thereβs no shortage of adventure. From bungee jumping to sea kayaking, tubing and even great white shark cage diving at Mossel Bay. Golf courses, horse riding, mountain biking and canoeing add to the variety.
The beauty of the Garden Route lies in its flexibility: be active when you want, unhurried when you donβt. Filling your days will not be a problem. Choosing what to leave out may be more difficult!
Safari Here or Eastern Cape
It even has some wildlife options. Several private game lodges lie within easy reach of the Garden Route, offering a gentle introduction to wildlife viewing, especially good for families with younger children. Think plains game rather than the adrenalin of big predators.
Alternatively, the malaria-free game reserves of theEastern Cape are only a scenic drive away and pair particularly well with the Garden Route.
For those who prefer not to drive, guided touring or transfers can also be arranged. But if you want to try a road trip, this is the place to do it.

Summer is the perfect time to visit the Garden Route, especially for sun-seekers aiming to escape the worst of the northern hemisphere winter. Itβs warm, temperate and ideal for beach time and outdoor living. Being by the coast, it rarely gets unbearably hot. Rain is possible, often in the evenings, but rarely disrupts activities.
There is a slight micro-climate difference within the Garden Route with Plettenberg tending to be drier than Knysna and Wilderness.
One of the best times to visit β fewer visitors, mild temperatures and excellent walking conditions. (The winter rains also tend to start later in the Garden Route than in the Cape.)
The spring is another lovely time to visit: fresh and scenic, with wildflowers, flowering fynbos, flowing rivers and great conditions for hiking and kayaking.
Spring is also a variable season. It could be sunny and warm. Or there could be late-season showers.
