The Dolphin Coast stretches north of Durban for about 70 kilometres, with golden beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters, and relaxed coastal towns such as Umhlanga Rocks, Ballito, and Salt Rock. It’s a very appealing area if you want a few indulgent days by the sea.

You are away from the city bustle, yet easily within reach of its attractions such as the Indian spice markets, Botanical Gardens or uShaka Waterfront.

Most of our clients base themselves at one of these coastal resorts, where the rhythm of your day alternates between beach walks, ocean swims, and al fresco seafood lunches. The Indian Ocean remains swimmable year-round.

Plus, with lifeguard-protected beaches, calm bays and easy casual eateries, it’s an excellent choice for families.

Everywhere, the traditional arts and crafts of the Zulu people are available to buy, especially their stunning beadwork. (Zulu beadwork has its own unique language with each colour carrying a meaning in a visual language passed down through generations.)

Golf on the Dolphin Coast

This is also a fantastic area for golfers, especially in the dry sunny winter months. There are plenty of top golf courses to choose from including Zimbali Golf Reserve, Royal Durban Country Club, Mount Edgecombe and Umhlali.

Durban

Durban is a vibrant city and major harbour overlooking a sublime stretch of the Indian Ocean. We don’t usually recommend staying in Durban, as we find the Dolphin Coast more appealing but it’s well worth a visit. As it adds a lively cultural counterpoint with distinctive cuisine and cultural diversity. This is South Africa’s most Indian-influenced city, where the scent of curry and cardamom drifts through the bustling spice markets, and colonial architecture mingles with modern beachfront towers.

Highlights include the uShaka Marine World for families: a superb oceanarium and waterpark, the lush Botanical Gardens, and the lively BAT Centre, where local artists display their work.

Whether you treat the Dolphin Coast as a relaxing start or end to your KwaZulu-Natal journey, or a coastal base for exploring the region, it balances ease and energy beautifully.

What’s the best time to visit the Dolphin Coast?

The region enjoys a subtropical climate, making it ideal year-round. Summer (roughly from October to March) brings hot, humid days and lively seas, while winter (May to August) is warm and dry. Perfect for swimming and sightseeing, though the temperatures may not offer sun-bathing weather in June and July.

Is the Dolphin Coast suitable for families?
Yes, most beach resorts have safe swimming areas, kids’ activities, and family-friendly restaurants. Ballito and Umhlanga Rocks are particularly good choices for families.

How far is the Dolphin Coast from Durban Airport?
This is part of its attraction as it is only 15–20 minutes from King Shaka International Airport so transfers to Umhlanga or Ballito are quick and easy.
