Hike to Dian Fossey’s Grave
Volcanoes National Park
₤ 60 (Pps)
Dian Fossey was an American primatologist and anthropologist who committed her life to the conservation of the mountain gorilla, spending 18 year studying and earning the trust of the great apes in Volcanoes National Park, while taking it upon herself to fight poachers and bring international attention to the plight of these incredible animals. This is all captured in her memoir, “Gorillas In The Midst,” which was also adapted into a film in 1988.
Fossey arrived in Rwanda in 1967 and set up the Karisoke Research Centre in the saddle between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. It’s largely due to her efforts that the mountain gorillas were saved from extinction. Unfortunately, it also led to her demise. She was found murdered in her house nearby in 1985, and was buried next to her favourite gorilla, Digit, in a gorilla graveyard near the research centre.
A guided trek through the forest to Fossey’s grave begins at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters and takes about 3-4 hours roundtrip, reaching an altitude of around 3,000 m (9,800 ft). The actual hiking component takes approx 2-3 hours including rests.
You hike with a park guide in a group of not more than 8 hikers. On the waym you will probably see plenty of small wildlife and birds which your guide will point out. Once you reach the grave, your guide will help you more about her life’s work and then you visit the remnants of the research centre.
Logistics
In peak season, you should book this hike ahead of time as it is popular. The best time to visit is in the drier months of June to September.
The hike will be muddy in the rainier months and we recommend strong hiking boots and walking stricks.
Fitness
As it is at altitude, you need to be reasonably fit/exercising regularly.
Especially when you consider that you will undoubtedly have already done the gorills trekking experience on the previous day and so your legs will be a little tired from that. So it is two stiff walks in two time in mountainous/hilly terrain and at altitude.
If in doubt, train for it!
