Moholoholo Rehabilitation centre

We are not generally a fan of the more touristy rehabilitation centres on offer in South Africa. But if you have some time to spare, especially if you are travelling with young children, you may well enjoy Moholoholo Rehabilitation centre.

Moholoholo is nestled in a picturesque setting at the base of the the majestic ‘Mariepskop’ of the Drakensberg escarpment. It has become a haven for the rehabilitation and care of abandoned, injured and poisoned wildlife.

A tour of Moholoholo gives you an interesting look at what is being done to rehabilitate animals. Particularly birds which have been poisoned, injured, or orphaned. Enter walk-in aviaries containing crowned eagles, vultures, fish eagles and many other raptors. Or, walk among orphaned wildebeest and red hartebeest.

The centre has a long standing and successful Serval Breeding Project which is a success story all of its own. Having bred and released over 160 serval back into areas where they have previously become extinct, those females have since mated with wild males in the area of release. Moholoholo is also the only facility in South Africa to have successfully bred the endangered Crown Eagle.

Tours take place in the morning at 9.30am, or mid afternoon at 3pm and last approximately 1 to 1½ hours. If you are staying at a country lodge in the Blyde River Canyon area, its well worth setting off early to catch the morning tour and then continue to your private game lodge of choice.

Please note: We do not book this excursion on a standalone basis, but you can book it online at http://www.moholoholo.co.za/
