Ocean Safaris in Winter and Spring
Take an ocean safari to enjoy the spectacular marine life from Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route. What you will see depends on the time of year.
The whale ‘season’ in the Garden Route runs from July through to November. The peak months are August to October. At this time you’ve got a good chance of seeing both Southern Right and Humpback whales. They come right into the bays along the South African coastline to give birth. Ocean Blue Adventures offers a 2 hour close and personal whale watching tour with awe-inspiring encounters with the fascinating and majestic whales.
Their close encounter permit allows you to experience marine mammal viewing from only 50 metres away (instead of the usual 300 metres). If the whales approach the boat, you’ll be able to get an up-close and personal experience with these mammals.
The Southern Right Whale is the most likely whale species to be seen. The huge oval head is covered in distinctive wart-like bumps called callosities. The adults are approximately 14-18 metres long and weigh about 40-80 tons.
Ocean Safaris in Summer & Autumn
The 2 hour dolphin encounter ocean safari (December to June) gives you a greater chance of seeing the rare Humpback dolphins as well as the more common Bottlenose dolphins.
In addition to whale and dolphin-watching, you’ll enjoy many other wonders of Plettenberg Bay: pelagic birds, seals, sharks, history and even geology. You will also head to the Robberg Sea Colony to see (and smell) the 5,000 seals in their natural environment.
The price above is for the 2 hour Close Encounter whale watching ocean safari. The dolphin safari is quite a bit less expensive – contact us for a price.
