Safari and Beach Honeymoons

For many couples, safari followed by beach is just about the perfect honeymoon combination.
The first part brings early morning game drives, extraordinary wildlife and evenings around the campfire. Then you change pace completely: warm seas, long lunches, perhaps some diving or snorkelling – and very little need to set an alarm.
But choosing two beautiful places isn't quite enough.
The best safari and beach honeymoons also need to work seasonally and logistically. A fabulous safari lodge and idyllic island can lose some of their appeal if getting between them involves several flights, an overnight stop and most of a day in transit.
So we look at the honeymoon as one journey: when you're travelling, how much safari you want, what sort of beach appeals to you and how easily the two can be combined.

Northern KwaZulu-Natal combines excellent safari reserves such as Phinda and other Zululand reserves with the remote beaches around the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and southern Mozambique.
This works especially well if you prefer smaller lodges, wildlife and wild coastline – such as such as Thonga Beach Lodge, to a conventional resort.
South Africa probably offers some of the best year-round game-viewing. So if your wedding doesn’t co-incide with the ‘classic safari season’ (June to September), then a South Africa safari and beach honeymoon in the Cape could be perfect.
Best for: Nature-loving couples who want safari and beach without creating an elaborate multi-country itinerary.
South Africa Safari & Beach Honeymoon

South Africa offers outstanding safari choices, particularly in the private reserves around the Kruger National Park, and Mozambique adds warm Indian Ocean water, beautiful beaches and a much slower pace.
The Bazaruto Archipelago works particularly well if you want an intimate island feel, good diving and snorkelling and somewhere that feels distinctly African rather than like a large international resort.
You can also add Cape Town and the Winelands, making this an excellent choice if you have two weeks or more.
Best for: First-time visitors wanting safari, city, food and wine plus a tropical beach.

It offers a much wider range of resort styles than Mozambique – from attractive good-value hotels through to some exceptional luxury resorts – as well as restaurants, spas, golf and plenty of activities if you don't want to spend every day lying on the beach.
This can work particularly well for couples who enjoy the safari experience but want the beach section to feel more like a classic resort holiday.
Best for: Couples wanting safari followed by an easy, polished beach stay with plenty of choice.

Start with safari in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Highlands or Tarangire, then fly across to Zanzibar for a complete change of pace: warm Indian Ocean water, white beaches and a few days with considerably less reason to get up at dawn.
It is also a very flexible combination. Your safari might focus on the great wildlife areas of northern Tanzania, while the beach can range from a small boutique hotel to a more luxurious resort. For couples wanting something quieter and more secluded, we can also look at Pemba or one of the smaller offshore islands.
Choosing the right beach area matters, however. Zanzibar's resorts vary enormously in atmosphere, beach quality and style, so we wouldn't simply add the nearest five-star hotel to the end of your safari.
Best for: Couples wanting a classic East African safari followed by a tropical island, with relatively straightforward connections between the two.

Areas such as Diani Beach and the quieter stretches of the coast beyond it offer warm seas, white sand and a good choice of smaller boutique hotels and more luxurious beach retreats. The logistics are relatively straightforward, which means less honeymoon time is lost travelling between safari and beach.
It is also generally a more cost-effective option than adding a separate Indian Ocean island.
Best for: Couples wanting a classic East African safari followed by an easy, relaxed beach stay without over-complicating the itinerary.
Kenya & Seychelles
If you want the beach element to be particularly special – and have a higher overall budget – Kenya combines very well with the Seychelles.
The contrast is superb: classic East African safari followed by some of the Indian Ocean's most beautiful beaches, with accommodation ranging from stylish smaller resorts to exceptional private-island stays.
Best for: Couples looking for a more luxurious safari-and-island honeymoon, where the beach is as important as the safari.

Start with safari in the South Luangwa or Lower Zambezi, where smaller camps, excellent wildlife and activities such as walking safaris, canoeing and boating create a strong sense of adventure.
Then slow the pace beside Lake Malawi. It may not be the ocean, but the clear freshwater, sandy beaches and laid-back island lodges give you much the same change of rhythm. Spend your days swimming, freshwater snorkelling and diving, kayaking or simply watching the sun set over the lake.
The combination feels more individual than a conventional safari-and-resort honeymoon, while still giving you a very satisfying contrast between wildlife and downtime.
Best for: Couples who want a more adventurous honeymoon with character, variety and a sense of discovery.

We can adjust the safari camps, beach hotels, length, routing and level of luxury according to your dates, interests and budget.

Tanzania + Zanzibar and South Africa + Mozambique are among the classic combinations because they give you a strong contrast between safari and beach.
Kenya + the Kenyan coast also works very naturally. As does South Africa as long as you are travelling at the right time.
Other combinations can be equally rewarding, but the journey between safari and beach may require more thought.
It depends on both halves of the trip. The best safari season isn’t always the best beach season, which is why the month of your wedding can materially affect which combination we recommend.
Tell us your travel dates first and we’ll narrow down the options that work well for both wildlife and beach weather.
Usually safari first. You start with the activity, early starts and excitement of safari and then wind down at the beach at the end of your honeymoon.
However, flight routes occasionally make beach-first more sensible, so we don’t treat this as a rigid rule. Or you may simply want to relax after a hectic run-up to your wedding?
They have very different personalities.
Mozambique is excellent for barefoot island romance and diving. Seychelles has exceptional beaches and some very luxurious options. Mauritius offers polished resorts, excellent facilities and plenty to do. Zanzibar combines easily with the rest of Tanzania and ranges from boutique hotels to high-end resorts. Lake Malawi is a more unusual, adventurous alternative.
The right choice depends as much on your preferred style as on the beach itself.
