Wine, Wildlife & Warm Seas: Design Your Perfect South Africa Honeymoon

South Africa honeymoons - Marataba safari lodge

South Africa packs a lot of honeymoon into one trip because you can build so many different types of trips.

Cape Town’s ocean views and buzzy food scene, vineyard picnics in the Winelands, big-five safaris. Add a road trip through the Whale Coast to the Garden Route, with its mountain backdrop, lakes and golden beaches. And, if you’re travelling in the South African cooler months, head north to KwaZulu Natal for the ultimate bush and beach combination.

But if you specifically want a classic tropical beach resort with warm seas and palm-fringed beaches – then Mozambique or Mauritius make excellent additions.

South Africa also gives you plenty of choice in how you travel. You can self-drive parts of the Cape, have private guides and transfers throughout, or mix up the two.

And importantly, a memorable South Africa honeymoon doesn’t require ultra-luxury hotels every night. There are excellent places to stay at many different price levels, leaving you free to spend more where it matters most to you.

South Africa is ideal if you want to chill out after the excitement of the wedding, celebrate a milestone wedding anniversary or simply escape from the distractions of everyday life.

Why South Africa works so well for a honeymoon?

Variety without enormous distances

South Africa walking safarisFew destinations combine city, wine country, mountains, coastline and Big Five safari quite so easily. That means you can create a honeymoon with plenty of contrast without too many big travel days.

An excellent first safari

The private reserves around Greater Kruger offer superb game viewing and a wide choice of safari lodges, from characterful smaller camps to some of Africa’s most luxurious properties.

If you’d prefer to avoid malaria areas, South Africa also has several excellent malaria-free safari options.

Beautiful beaches without leaving the country

South Africa has a long and varied coastline, from the beaches around Cape Town, the Whale Coast and the Garden Route to the warmer waters of KwaZulu-Natal.

For summer honeymoons, it is perfectly possible to combine city, safari and beach entirely within South Africa.

Plenty to do – if you want to

A South Africa honeymoon needn’t revolve around lying around a pool. You could hike, kayak with penguins, cycle through wine country, zip-line in indigenous forest, you can explore Cape Town, take a scenic road trip or walk in the mountains.

Equally, you can design a much slower trip with long lunches, beautiful hotels and plenty of downtime.

Flexible on budget

South Africa offers a much broader range of accommodation and travel styles than many safari destinations.

You might choose an exceptional safari lodge but a charming boutique hotel elsewhere. Or self-drive through the Cape and spend the saving on a particularly special coastal or safari stay.

We think that flexibility is one of South Africa’s greatest advantages.

What sort of South Africa honeymoon suits you?

Most of the South Africa honeymoons we plan fall into three broad styles.

Cape Town, Winelands, Coast & Safari

South Africa honeymoons - Cape TownFor many couples, this is the classic South Africa honeymoon – although the exact combination of areas varies by time of travel and your inclination.

You might spend a few days in Cape Town, slow the pace in the Winelands, perhaps add a coastal stay or scenic road trip along the Whale Coast or Garden Route, combining beaches with forests, coastal walks, restaurants and boat cruises. And finish with a superb safari either in the Greater Kruger, or perhaps the Eastern Cape.

It gives you a wonderful mixture of food, wine, scenery, wildlife and downtime, without needing to rush between too many places.

It also offers plenty of flexibility. You can self-drive some sections, travel privately throughout, choose intimate boutique hotels or splurge on one or two standout stays.

Best for: First-time visitors, Summer honeymoons, and anyone wanting city, safari and coast.

A More Active South Africa Honeymoon

South Africa honeymoons - mountain biking

South Africa is also an excellent choice for couples who want their honeymoon to feel like an adventure rather than a conventional romantic escape.

You might combine hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, whale watching, a scenic road trip, walking safari or time in the mountains with Cape Town and a few particularly special hotels or lodges.

The key is not to turn the honeymoon into an endurance test. We would usually mix the more active days with beautiful places to stay, good food, a memorable safari and enough time simply to enjoy being there.

That makes South Africa particularly appealing to those who want to do things together, while still giving the trip a definite sense of occasion.

Best for: Active couples who want adventure, scenery and wildlife, with a few honeymoon-worthy treats along the way.

KwaZulu-Natal Safari & Beach

Dolphin Coast surferA third option is a more traditional bush-and-beach honeymoon within South Africa.

This works particularly well for couples travelling during the northern-hemisphere summer – South Africa’s winter – when the Cape can be cooler, but KwaZulu-Natal enjoys a warmer, more subtropical climate.

Combine safari in one of the Zululand game reserves with time on the northern KwaZulu-Natal coast, where warm Indian Ocean waters and wild beaches create a very different feel from the Cape.

Cape Town can easily be added if you have time.

Best for: May-to-September honeymoons, especially couples wanting safari and warm coastal time without flying to another country.

Where is it worth spending more?

Honeymoon destinations in Africa - couple man and women drinking coffee during sunrise in Cape Town South Africa. One of the advantages of South Africa is that you don’t need to splurge everywhere.

We might recommend spending more on:

  • Your safari lodge, where the game reserve and quality of guiding genuinely affect the experience
  • A particularly beautiful Winelands hotel
  • A private guide or unique excursion for a special day in Cape Town or wine country
  • A memorable room or suite for part of the honeymoon
  • An extra night somewhere rather than adding another destination

And there are other places where a charming, well-located boutique hotel may be all you need.

Tell us your overall budget and we’ll help you decide where the extra spend will make the biggest difference.

Special South Africa honeymoon experiences

South Africa honeymoon - Marataba Safari Lodge treehouse sleep-outDepending on your itinerary, you could include:

  • A food or wine experience in the Cape
  • A picnic or long lunch on a wine estate
  • A sleep-out or star bed on safari
  • A walking safari
  • A scenic helicopter flight over Table Mountain
  • Kayaking, hiking or cycling around the Cape & Winelands
  • A few wonderfully unplanned afternoons beside a pool or the sea

We wouldn’t try to pack them all in. A honeymoon usually works better with a few memorable experiences and enough time to enjoy where you’re staying.

There isn’t one perfect month because South Africa has several different climate zones.

South Africa works throughout the year if we choose the route around your travel dates.

For outstanding Big Five game viewing, predator action and a wide choice of beautiful lodges, the private reserves of Greater Kruger, Sabi Sands & Timbavati are difficult to beat.

If avoiding malaria areas is important, we can instead look at the Eastern Cape, Madikwe or Waterberg. Or opt for northern KwaZulu Natal for he ultimate bush and beach South Africa honeymoon.

Yes, South Africa has an extensive and beautiful coastline, and during the summer months you can pair Eastern Cape safari lodges with Garden Route or Wild Coast beaches.

If you’re travelling during the South African winter or specifically want warm tropical seas and a classic tropical island or resort experience, you can pair the Kruger with Benguerra/Bazaruto via a direct flight to Vilanculos

Or add the beautiful KwaZulu-Natal coast to Phinda Game Reserve for example.

A self-drive honeymoon works brilliantly around the Cape, Winelands and Garden Route and gives you plenty of independence. It’s also cost effective and allows you to stretch your budget further.

But we can just as easily arrange private guides and transfers if you prefer. Or create a hybrid trip where you enjoy touring and excursions in Cape Town, and a road trip along the coast, and then a transfer to your safari lodge.

Compared with many safari destinations, South Africa offers exceptional flexibility.

There is a broad range of good hotels and safari lodges, and self-driving part of the trip can reduce costs considerably. That means we can usually decide where to spend more and where to keep things simpler, to make the most of your budget.
