Overview
Arusha * Tarangire * Lake Manyara * Serengeti * Ngorongoro Crater
This is the classic northern Tanzania safari visiting the four main game reserves of Tanzania over eight days: Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, Olduvai Gorge en route to the Serengeti, and ending with the Ngorongoro Crater. But the highlight will probably be the romantic and game-filled plains of the Serengeti where you can see the constant cycle of the wildebeest migration. It uses individual lodges and it can be done on both a private basis (shown here) or scheduled basis in a small group context.
Tanzania Discovery Safari Accommodation (Private safari):
- 1 night Arusha, Forest Hill Lodge, Bed & Breakfast
- 1 night Burunge Tented Lodge, Full Board & Game Activities
- 1 night Lake Manyara, Manyara Lakeside Oasis, Full Board & Game Activities
- 2 nights Serengeti National Park, Kati Kati Camp, Full Board & Game Activities
- 2 nights Ngorongoro Crater National Park, Tloma Lodge, Full Board & Game Activities
- Road transfer back to Arusha and Kilimanjaro Airport
This itinerary departs from Kilimanjaro International Airport (7 nights). But you can also depart and return to Arusha, if that suits your flight and other arrangements better, with a 6 night version.
We have shown the price for a private safari with 2 people.
If there are 4 people on the private tour, it is less expensive. You can also opt for a scheduled tour "seat in vehicle' option which is perfect for solo travellers, or couples on a budget. This is a little more expensive than the price with 4 people ($50 pp more approx). Contact us for a price.
Tanzania Discovery is a safari by road with no light aircraft flights. So it is popular with guests who are not fond of small planes. You travel in a comfortable 4WD safari vehicle with an experienced English-speaking Tanzanian guide. Much of the travel between various locations is scenic or interesting (or both) so the journey is very much part of the safari, especially between the Ngorongoro highlands and the Serengeti. We also think that a road safari gives you a great sense of Tanzania. The group comprises a maximum of 7 guests.
But....
A full driving tour does mean quite a lot of time travelling in a vehicle. If you are happy to pay a little more, we recommend our Taste of Tasted Tanzania. This is a private tour but the price is not that much more if you are 4 or more people. And you FLY back from the Serengeti so there is less driving overall.
Upgrade Option
Our Upgrade option is also a private tour but uses smarter (and more exclusive) accommodation with Wellworth Hotels and Lodges. Personally we think this is well worth the upgrade price.
- 1 night Arusha, Gran Melia Arusha Hotel, Bed & Breakfast
- 1 night Tarangire Kuro Treetops Lodge, Full Board & Game Activities
- 1 night Lake Manyara Kilimamoja Lodge, Full Board & Game Activities
- 2 nights Serengeti National Park, Ol Serai Moru Kopjes Tented Camp, Full Board & Game Activities
- 2 nights Ngorongoro Crater National Park, Ngorongoro Oldeani Mountain Lodge, Full Board & Game Activities
Tailor-made this Trip - Add on Zanzibar
If you wish to add on Zanzibar, we may recommend opting for the 6 night version of this itinerary which starts and ends in Arusha. As several charter companies fly from Arusha to Zanzibar on a daily basis. You can add a night in Arusha at the end and then we can arrange a Zanzibar beach stay for a few nights.
Note that if you choose the private option, you would be able to return to Arusha in time to connect with a flight to Zanzibar on the same day.
Notes
- The cost of the private tour for 4 people is actually a little LESS than the cost of the scheduled tour. So, if you are a family or group of friends we strongly recommend the private tour.
- The day of departure for the scheduled tours is every Saturday. It is easier and quicker to get availability for private tours if they also depart on the Saturday. Though you can depart on any day of the week if you prefer.
- The single supplement is less than 15% more than the per person price. So we recommend a scheduled tour for solo travellers as it is an easy way to travel without paying over the odds for a private tour.
- This itinerary shows as departing from Kilimanjaro International Airport but you can also depart and end in Arusha Town (6 night itinerary). But only on the scheduled tour .
